Hey everyone,
I’m Selvi, I come from a small family – just me, my mom, and my two brothers. We’re from the village of Munti Gunung in Karangasem. Sometimes people call my village Kampong Kutukan (Village of Lice) because in my village poverty is a harsh reality for most.
Let me take you back to where it all started. Picture a young kid hitting the streets with her mom, knocking on doors just make ends meet. It wasn’t easy, you know? Begging felt like swallowing your pride every single time, but we did what we had to do to survive.
We weren’t just beggars though. We were farmers too, picking cloves alongside my parents. Watching them climb those bamboo ladders, fear in their eyes, broke my heart. But amidst the struggle, there were moments of laughter, collecting cloves and cracking jokes with my elder brother. Those memories will never leave me.
Then, at 6 years old, things changed. Mom got a job at Yayasan Sinar Harapan Bali. It was a lifeline for us, a chance to stop begging and start living. And soon enough, I got to join the foundation’s school. I’ll never forget the joy of finally being able to learn like other kids.
Fast forward to elementary school. I’d walk there with my parents, buzzing with excitement to share my day with them. The foundation became my haven, where I’d finish my homework and learn as much as I could.
And you know what? I worked my socks off! I got second place in my class – a moment of pure pride. None of it would have been possible with the foundation, guiding me and believing in me every step of the way.
But life wasn’t all smooth sailing. The pandemic hit, locking us down and forcing school online. It was tough, especially with just one shared handphone between me and my dad. But we made it work, because giving up was not an option.
Now here I am, in 9th grade, about to take on junior high. It’s been a journey of highs and lows, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks to the foundation, I’ve seen a world of possibilities open up before me.
So here’s to Yayasan Sinar Harapan Bali – my beacon of hope in the darkest of times. You’ve given me the chance to dream, to learn, to become more than I ever though possible. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
My name is Ramon and I am the youngest of 3 siblings. I was born in Tianyar, Karangasem here in Bali. My parents are illiterate and my family has always struggled economically.
I am luckier than many from my district. My parents enrolled my and my elder brother in school. But it was very hard, even though I was already in 3rd grade I remember that I could not even read or write properly. My brother tried to help me but I was still falling further and further behind. Also, while my classmates could go home and play and study, I had to help my parents. I walked the street everyday selling tissue paper, bracelets and cheap trinkets to tourists. I would be out until the early hours of the morning, before coming home to sleep for a while and then it was back to school. I was always tired and could never concentrate or understand. It all seemed impossible.
My parents found Yayasan Sinar Harapan Bali (YSHB), and my new teachers realised that I had problems keeping up. They put me back through the basic and persevered until I understand my school work. They also convinced my parents to stop making me work on the streets, which made me very happy. I learn new things every day and by the time I graduated 6th grade, I was a good student and ranked first in class. YSHB even held a ceremony for us and I was so proud of myself.
When Covid-19 started, my family decided to move into the YSHB center because it was safer. I could now spend every day with some of the YSHB staff, esp. Kak Anggi and Bli Eka. They helped me improve my bad habits and convinced me to aim higher and further. By the time we were back in the classrooms, I had a new found hunger to fight for a better life.
YSHB enrolled me into Harapan School, and I have made so many good friends. With YSHB backing me up, I was doing well and I loved school. I am so excited about learning, not only new information but new skills ( I love cooking in my spare time). I am currently in my last year of SMP (Junior high), even though I am a few years behind my peers I do not mind. I want to study programming when I go to university one day and that is what I will continue to work towards.
I cannot thank YSHB enough, to Miss Charlotte, Kak Anggi, Bli Eka, Bu Dewa and everyone. I will not disappoint you and no matter what this journey brings I know I have your support and thus I know I will be able to do anything I put my mind to.

Hello, I’m I Dewa Ayu Anggi Cahyani. I am born and bred in Bali.
For most of my childhood, my family’s finances were very unstable. To add to that, my culture believed that a girl’s education wasn’t important. So, no one expected me to study very hard or get very far. However, my grandmother (the matriarch of my family) told my parents that she expected me to be well educated and my parents supported that decision.
As a teenager, I was rebellious. I joined a “gang” and caused a lot of trouble at school. My parents always believed in me though, and enrolled me in a great high school despite everything. There I got a better education, better teachers, peers that encouraged me to excel, basically everything a child needs to grow and learn.
After I graduated, I wasn’t sure what I would do. I got the opportunity to experience several careers before I was hired as a teacher by an NGO that helped children from the slums. One day, one of my students began to read. The understanding that I helped her do that was inspiring, and addictive. This NGO was also where I met Charlotte.
Although we came from different backgrounds, cultures and countries, we were passionate about education and believed that teachers were so important to the future of my country. Good teachers, that see each child’s potential and who are able to nurture that potential. In 2014, we decided that we would start an NGO, to use our experience and expertise to help both children that needed good teachers and people that wanted to become those teachers.
Teaching allows me, not only to educate my students but, to learn about myself through teaching each child. Life, as we all know, is never smooth sailing. But I was lucky enough to have people that supported me and believed in me.
I want make sure those who need it get that too.
Hello, Im Charlotte Goh. I grew up in a family that valued generosity, forward planning, and respect. I was also fortunate enough to have educators who were passionate about their work. My teachers not only believed in every student’s potential but also offered their unwavering support both inside and outside the classroom.
All that said, I was a horrible student. I never passed up homework on time, I was always busy with everything else but what I needed to do, my grades were horrendous. However, my teachers never gave up on me. I was cheered on, helped up, even pulled along when necessary by both my family and my wonderful teachers. I am everything I am today because of them.
I am the odd one out in our little YSHB world. I am not Indonesian, but I have developed a deep love for this beautiful country. I met Anggi while volunteering at an NGO in Bali back in 2011. Our shared belief in the importance of excellent educators fueled us to establish an NGO in 2014.
In 2014, we decided to start an NGO together that would train teachers to provide children, most give up on, with the education they need to thrive. I have worked here for over a decade now, realise that there are many children here that need support. They need a chance to become someone they, and their country, deserves.
I have been immensely fortunate in my life, and I am absolutely honoured to be able to pass the love and support on.
